Update from Rep. Selcer

Yvonne Selcer copy 2As you may have seen in the news, it has been busy over at the state capitol.  It is an honor to serve on the House Education Finance, Education Innovation Policy, and Government Operations and Elections committees.  I have also been appointment to the Government Operations and Elections Committee’s subcommittee on Metropolitan Council oversight, in addition to having been appointed to the MN P-20 Partnership and continuing to serve on our bi-partisan House Small Business Caucus and bi-partisan Childhood Obesity Working group. I will also be joining a bi-partisan caucus dealing with ways we can assist our Minnesota veterans.

We have spent a good amount of time on overviews in committee, as we have another large Freshman class to assist in getting up to speed. We have just begun to hear bills in committee, and passed disaster relief off the House floor. . I am working on authoring and co-authoring a number of bills, including being the chief author of legislation to bond for the SW LRT, and will keep you apprised as more legislation rolls out.

You have seen in the media accounts of the Governor’s budget, as well as bills being brought forward by the Senate DFL majority and the House GOP majority. There is an emphasis on education and transportation this session, and I hope that you will continue to share your thoughts and questions with me on these and other issues of importance to you as we move forward.  As always, thank you for the honor of being your voice in St. Paul.

Were you elected a delegate at your 2014 precinct caucus? If so, you are also a delegate for our 2015 convention. The details are still coming together, but we do have the date, time and location:

Where:  Glen Lake Activity Center, 14350 Excelsior Blvd, Minnetonka, MN

When:  Thursday, May 14, 2015, 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

Update from State Senate Candidate Laurie McKendry

14-11-McKendry-200x300I love living here. And, I feel this even more strongly the more people here in Eden Prairie and Minnetonka. It’s the conversations I’ve had with you that I’m running for the Minnesota Senate — to put people before politics.

I’ll be going door-to-door in our district as soon as the weather permits and hope I’ll catch you home.  If I miss you, or if you’d like to let me know your thoughts now, please visit my website and complete the survey? I believe before you listen to politicians’ promises, shouldn’t they listen to you first?

Update from Joan Howe-Pullis

Joan Howe-Pullis & Young DemsEarlier this year, I was happy to attend the Minnesota AFL-CIO Path to Power Campaign and Candidate Training. Throughout the two-day course, expert campaigners and trainers shared valuable information to empower candidates to run effective and authentic campaigns. It is true that every campaign is different, and in the thick of the election season, each candidate’s campaign can seem isolated. Sharing best practices and building relationships among fellow DFL candidates and key campaign activists was a wonderful experience of building shared competency, community and power! More trainings are planned for the future. I recommend that anyone interested take the time to attend a training and increase the effectiveness of your campaigning efforts in 2016. And, of course, I would welcome any questions anyone interested in joining my team may have.

Joan Howe-Pullis & Young DemsA big thank you to our House District 48B candidate, Joan Howe-Pullis. Joan began her run for office in June. She developed a strong team of volunteers, who worked for her throughout the months leading up to Election Day.

We weren’t able to make change happen this cycle on the B-side of our district, but that doesn’t diminish any of the effort Joan and her team brought to the race. Joan and her volunteers knocked over 10,000 doors in just a bit over 5 months. That’s dedication to finding out what’s important to the people of Eden Prairie.

Eden Prairie is a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire. We have great schools, parks and city services that are envied throughout the region and beyond. Our city services and features can be attributed to the leadership and commitment to excellence that our current mayor and City Council members guide. Sherry Butcher Wickstrom has been a wise voice focused on the future sustainability of our city with an eye to innovation. Sherry is effective and brings passion to her decision-making. Kathy Nelson has a long history with listening to the concerns of citizens and finding resolutions to problems. Both Sherry and Kathy deserve your vote.

Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens has earned the respect of so many for her excellence in leadership for our community on so many leading edge issues. Nancy, Sherry and Kathy have a proven history of being wise stewards of our environment and in particular our tax dollars. Without any doubts each deserves your vote on Nov. 4.

And in House District 48B Joan Howe-Pullis has earned my vote to serve our community by listening and representing all people in our community not based on party but on what is right. We need to seek common ground to create better solutions for all. Joan will listen and work hard for everyone.

Our schools must have your Yes votes on both questions, to meet the future educational needs of our students and the future property values of this community.  If these questions do not pass our schools and children will be impacted. Once programs are cut it takes years to restore and remember there is no rewind button for childhood. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.” Please vote Yes on both questions.

This is basic, but it deserves saying:  When a candidate who vows to work across the aisle is elected, we should be assured he/she will respect our positions notwithstanding which side of the aisle we prefer.

When a candidate has the endorsement or the support of a political party, we should expect that political party to support and embrace the candidate’s promise to work across the aisle. In fact, each political party’s platform should include a statement to this effect.

When we study the candidates, we should be assured of his/her (1) knowledge of the issues, (2) ability to communicate his/her position and why, (3) understanding and awareness of the community regarding the issues, and (4) willingness to listen. We expect the elected candidate to bring those skills to our governing body.

In this election, I support Joan Howe-Pullis because she has the integrity, intelligence and ability to negotiate. Although Joan has the support of the DFL, she has made the promise to work across the aisle and has said that commitment will be foremost in her mind in the middle of debate.

Joan Howe-Pullis is serious about what we have to say; she listens.

My acquaintance with Joan Howe-Pullis has been in the context of making things work with limited resources in a brief time frame in challenging circumstances. Time and again, I’ve seen Joan volunteer and cause results that in retrospect seem amazing if not miraculous. Listening well, hearing two or more sides to an issue, and finding innovative solutions that call for the best from all parties innovative solutions that call for the best from all parties is a talent she brings and develops in others who participate with her.

Much has been said about what she stands for, including a stable and growing economy with resources and broad demand from a developing middle-class. This value was heightened by an experience as a restauranteur with her husband in 2008, when their business became a casualty of the recession, itself a result of failed financial regulation and government oversight. Some conservatives tout this lack of oversight as a good thing. I and a lot of Americans who lost much of the value of the 401Ks disagree with this idea.

Her experience as a teacher and drama coach for young people in summer camp productions speak to her commitment to you people and out future. What I trust about Joan is her sense of proportion and her willingness to speak out. She hasn’t lost her sense of humor about human frailties, and she doesn’t tolerate mediocrity or complacency either.

Joan strikes me as particularly practical as well as effective. She will suggest better alternatives when something isn’t working the way it might, and so she’s running to be a more effective voice for Eden Prairie at the Capitol in St. Paul. I want to make sure we have the best kind of representative advocating for us, so I invite you to join me in supporting Joan Howe-Pullis.
