DEBATE: When It Comes to the Middle Class, Jeff Johnson Has “No Clue”

Johnson begins debate by saying he’ll stand up for the “forgotten” middle class, but can’t even identify who he would consider middle class
At today’s fourth gubernatorial debate at Hamline University, it was clear that when it comes to the middle class, Jeff Johnson is clueless. When asked to define the middle class, Johnson actually said: “I have no clue how I would define that.”
Johnson began today’s debate by saying he’ll stand up for the “forgotten” middle class and has repeatedly stated that his policies will benefit the middle class, but today showed that he can’t even identify who he would consider middle class.
Johnson’s answer is not surprising, given the fact that Johnson wants to cut taxes for the richest 2 percent of Minnesotans and large corporations – which will blow a billion dollar hole in the state’s budget – but he has yet to say how he would cut spending to pay for these tax breaks. The harsh spending cuts that would be required would almost certainly hit middle class families, but since Jeff Johnson doesn’t know who those families are, he wouldn’t have a clue.
“Today’s debate made crystal clear that Jeff Johnson is completely clueless about how to strengthen middle class families,” said DFL Chairman Ken Martin. “He has put forward no plan to improve education, transportation, or any other issue that affects the middle class. Why is Jeff Johnson running for governor? I have no clue.”
