How to argue about how to describe the Islamic State: Another post-Paris debate in Washington: Should we call those who make up the Islamic State “radical Islamists” or leave out the Islam part? Here’s each side’s basic argument to the question: Washington Post
- Yes, we should call them radical Islamists: The members of the Islamic State might be a small portion of one of the world’s largest religions. But it’s undeniable their philosophy is derived from Islam. And to fail to grasp a movement’s underpinnings is to not fully understand the movement. “This is not a geopolitical movement; it’s a religiously oriented movement.” Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said on Sunday.
- No, we shouldn’t call them radical Islamists: No one’s denying it’s Muslims who comprise the Islamic State. But they aren’t representative of their religion, and it’s counterproductive to spend so much time dwelling on that, especially when we need our Arab, mostly Muslim, allies to help us defeat the day’s biggest threat. “We are at war with people who use their religion for purposes of power and oppression,” Hillary Clinton said at Saturday’s second Democratic debate, “but I don’t want us to be painting with too broad a brush.”
