In the Know

Minnesota DFL
Aug. 12, 2015

Events today

  • 11 a.m. – Security officers at HealthEast hospitals and AFSCME Council 5 will demand safe staffing after nurses were assaulted by a patient at St. John’s Hospital last year. Bethesda Hospital, 559 Capital Blvd. N., St. Paul.
  • 3 p.m. – University of Minnesota physicists Greg Pawloski and Jianming Bian hold a public seminar to present the first results from one of the world’s largest physics experiments, based at the NOvA lab in northern Minnesota. Scientists involved recently saw their first evidence of oscillating ghostly particles, called neutrinos. This confirms that the detector not only functions as planned but also is making progress toward its goal of understanding the cosmos, including antimatter, dark matter and the Higgs boson. University of Minnesota Physics and Nanotechnology Building, Room 10, 115 Union St. NE, Minneapolis.
  • 6 p.m. – The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission will hold a meeting about the Great Northern Transmission Line at the Bigfork School. The 220-mile long, 500-kilovolt line proposed by Minnesota Power would be used to carry to electricity from Manitoba Hydro. The line would cross the border in Roseau County and — with the exact route as yet undecided — probably cut across Beltrami, Koochiching and Lake of the Woods counties before reaching its terminus at the Blackberry Substation near Grand Rapids in Itasca County.
  • Rep. Erin Murphy, the House author of Gov. Dayton’s universal pre-K initiative, will visit with educators and community members in Duluth about expanding early childhood education opportunities.

Mark your calendars

The 220-mile long, 500-kilovolt line proposed by Minnesota Power would be used to carry to electricity from Manitoba Hydro. The line would cross the border in Roseau County and — with the exact route as yet undecided — probably cut across Beltrami, Koochiching and Lake of the Woods counties before reaching its terminus at the Blackberry Substation near Grand Rapids in Itasca County.

Senate Majority PAC, the main outside group focused on trying to regain control of the upper chamber for Democrats, will begin running its first television ad of the 2016 cycle today. And it might look familiar: a narrator says GOP Sen. Kelly Ayotte puts the Koch brothers ahead of New Hampshire families. The spot, which a source tracking the air war says is backed up by $250,000, comes in response to a much larger buy that Americans for Prosperity, part of the Koch political network, placed against Ayotte’s likely challenger last week. “Fifteen months before the election, yet the out-of-state oil billionaire Koch Brothers have already spent $1.2 million dollars here in New Hampshire to keep Kelly Ayotte in the U.S. Senate,” a narrator says. “And, back in Washington, Ayottevoted to protect huge tax breaks for the oil industry—costing taxpayers $40 billion.” The Washington Post

Stephen Colbert booked Jeb for his debut show on CBS. Ratings are likely to be really high because of network promotion and post-Labor Day interest in what he’s all about. The conversation with Bush will be a great window into how much he’s changed since leaving Comedy Central and giving up his faux-conservative character:
.@JebBush will be on #LSSC Sept. 8! My first GOP candidate! Luckily I do 200 shows a year, so I think I can fit them all.
