In the Know

Minnesota DFL
Dec. 8, 2015

Events today

  • The United States Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Evenwel vs Abbott, a case that threatens the democratic principle of “one person, one vote,” that for decades has ensured that everyone in America, regardless of who they are or where they live, is entitled to equal representation. Evenwel could force states to leave out large segments of their populations when drawing legislative districts, simply because they are not voters, including children under 18 and legal permanent residents. If Sue Evenwel, the Republican operative filing the suit along with her Tea Party colleagues has her way, a majority (55 percent) of Hispanics would be left out of our democracy for purposes of representation. The same holds true for one-third of Native Americans, 30 percent of African-Americans, and 45 percent of Asian Americans.
  • 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. – Special election in Dist. 3A. District residents can find their polling place here.

Lee, the ranking member and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy, and Consumer Rights, will hold a committee hearing on Anheuser-Busch Inbev’s proposal to purchase SABMiller. The hearing will examine how the proposed merger of the world’s two biggest beer producers would impact competition and consumers across the country.
  • 11:30 a.m. – North Metro Senior Caucus meeting, Little Venetian Inn, 2900 Rice St #240, St Paul.
  • 6 p.m. – Erin Maye Quade for State House-Campaign Kick Off [Dist. 57A], 6 p.m., Rascals Bar and Grill, 7721 147th St. W, Apple Valley.

  • Dec. 14 – There was a great turnout for the Dec. 1 action in support for SEIU Local 284 Custodians whose jobs are being threatened by outsourcing. Teachers and other staff from the Elk River School District 728 turned out on a cold, snowy morning to give a “welcoming” message to district administrators and prospective bidders. The message was clear; teachers, paraprofessionals and custodians are united. However, the fight is not over and the biggest action will take place on Dec 14. SEIU Local 284, Elk River Education Association and the East Central Area Labor Council are asking for your support.  The demonstration is Dec 14 at 4:30 p.m. Everyone will meet at Gateway Church 13913 185thAve. NW, Elk River.
