2014 IndiaFest Event Has Local Ties


On August 16, the India Association of Minnesota hosted IndiaFest at the State Capitol grounds. It was a great day celebrating the the heritage, traditions, and joyous cultures of India. The StarTribune reported the event drew over 10,000 people. Here’s a link to their article.

Our own Shanti Shah is active in the organization and has been working with Indian American non-profits to help Indian Americans understand how to engage with their government officials.

“As a community,” said Shanti, “we tend not to be engaged in the political process. So, elected officials don’t know us. Bringing our legislators and the Governor to this event is one of the ways we can have a larger group of Indian Americans talk with them to begin learning about us and the issues that we’re concerned about.”

Moving into this election cycle, they’re hoping to leverage the organizations’ social media presence to provide useful links to the Secretary of States website for information on registering to vote, finding polling locations and more to help their members participate in the
