Selcer a positive leader

Elections are determined by who shows up. Don’t let the outside forces that have polluted our district with negative ads lead you to cynicism and apathy. Yvonne Selcer has reached out to the people of our district, listened thoughtfully , and represented us well. She is the type of intelligent, positive leader that we need. Vote for Yvonne Selcer. Your vote can make the difference.

Since Rep. Yvonne Selcer was elected in 2012, she has delivered on her promises to the people of northern Eden Prairie and southern Minnetonka. Our state budget is balanced, the billions of dollars owed our schools have been paid back, Minnesota has its largest rainy day fund ever and our state has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country.

Rep. Selcer is a mother, former teacher and School Board chair who especially understands the importance of a strong education system. She voted to pass free all-day kindergarten, which is saving individual Minnesota families thousands of dollars and ensuring their children get a great start in life. She authored a bill (which passed 130-0) that makes sure no child will go hungry at school, and she voted to freeze college tuition.

Her ability to bring people together and find common sense solutions is reflected in the high-profile endorsements she has received from Democrats, Republicans and Independents. These include Sen. Amy Klobuchar, former Republican Minnetonak Mayor Karen Anderson and Tom Horner, the former Independence Party candidate for governor.

Don’t believe a word of the toxic mailers against Rep. Selcer. Many of these are paid for by out-of-state corporate interests who want to buy our Legislature for their own financial gain. Instead, join the trusted Minnesota groups who support Rep. Selcer and re-elect her Nov. 4.

Selcer puts students first

When Yvonne Selcer became our state representative two years ago, I knew that with her background in education and business, she would get things accomplished for our state. Thanks to her, our students are off to a strong start this school year.

Rep. Selcer supported our youngest learners by voting to provide free all-day kindergarten for every child and expanding scholarships for preschool. It’s an investment that will help close the achievement gap, prepare our children for grade school, and save families thousands of dollars. Rep. Selcer also authored a school lunch bill that passed unanimously in the Minnesota House. As a result, children from low-income families will never be denied a hot lunch if they are unable to pay for it.

U of M and MnSCU students are also benefiting from Rep. Selcer’s investments in education. She reduced student debt by freezing tuition for two years and approving the largest financial aid increase in over a decade. It comes as welcome news after tuition had more than doubled over the past 10 years.

Education is a top priority for Rep. Yvonne Selcer. I plan to vote for her on Tuesday, Nov. 4, because there is no question she will always put Minnesota students first.

Selcer works across the aisle

Once again, the campaigning in this mid-term election tends negative. At least one candidate, Yvonne Selcer, state representative 48A, stands apart and shares her record and her vision.

I am an independent voter interested in supporting candidates who cross the aisle. I have gotten to know Yvonne who, during her first term, has been an independent voice that gets results. She is supported by folks from all parties … Sen. Amy Klobuchar, former Independence candidate for governor Tom Horner, and Republican Karen Anderson, former Minnetonka mayor … likely because she crosses the aisle.

I respect and support Yvonne because she listens to her constituents’ priorities, considers them as she develops her position and votes in consideration for the good of all Minnesotans. Her record speaks for itself.

Selcer supported cutting taxes for more than one million Minnesotans and paid back our schools. She worked to ensure a balanced budget without shifts, gimmicks or shutdowns. Seeing education of prime importance, Yvonne worked diligently to make all-day kindergarten a reality for all Minnesota children, froze college tuition, and passed legislation to protect students studying abroad. She voted against funding for the state office building because she believed that it was not the highest priority for Minnesotans.

Yvonne expresses a clear vision for the future:  growing our economy through wise investments, offering tax breaks, incentives and reducing red tape for small businesses and protecting our children’s futures. She has heard the desire of constituents to put families before politics and work to keep Minnesota the best place in America to live, work and raise a family.

I urge you to:  Vote on Tuesday, Nov. 4 to ensure your voice is heard, and cast your vote for Yvonne Selcer, state representative 48A, to elect a candidate who will reach across the aisle.

This is basic, but it deserves saying:  When a candidate who vows to work across the aisle is elected, we should be assured he/she will respect our positions notwithstanding which side of the aisle we prefer.

When a candidate has the endorsement or the support of a political party, we should expect that political party to support and embrace the candidate’s promise to work across the aisle. In fact, each political party’s platform should include a statement to this effect.

When we study the candidates, we should be assured of his/her (1) knowledge of the issues, (2) ability to communicate his/her position and why, (3) understanding and awareness of the community regarding the issues, and (4) willingness to listen. We expect the elected candidate to bring those skills to our governing body.

In this election, I support Joan Howe-Pullis because she has the integrity, intelligence and ability to negotiate. Although Joan has the support of the DFL, she has made the promise to work across the aisle and has said that commitment will be foremost in her mind in the middle of debate.

Joan Howe-Pullis is serious about what we have to say; she listens.
